Travelling to Chennai for a US Visa Appointment

Travel to Chennai at least a day before your interview. Trains arrive at Chennai Central or Egmore, flights land at Chennai International Airport about 21 km from the city centre, and all three connect to Thousand Lights by Chennai Metro or cab.
Who applies at the Chennai consulate?
The US Consulate General in Chennai is listed as serving a consular district that covers Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Kerala, Puducherry, Lakshadweep and the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. That is why applicants arrive from Madurai, Coimbatore, Kochi, Bengaluru and many smaller towns. Where you can book depends on the official appointment system and the State Department's rules, so check the appointment website before you plan a trip.
The State Department also says that wait times are estimates based on workload and vary week to week, and that you should apply early. Once you have a slot, work backwards from the date and book travel only after the appointment is confirmed.
Should you take a train, a flight or a bus?
Both main railway stations are in the city centre. Chennai Central handles long-distance trains, including trunk routes to Bengaluru, Howrah, Mumbai and New Delhi, and roughly 200 mail and express trains daily. Chennai Egmore is a major terminus for trains from central and southern Tamil Nadu, with about 120 mail and express trains daily. If you are coming from the south of the state, check Egmore first.
By air, Chennai International Airport is in Tirusulam, around 21 km southwest of the city centre. Terminal 2, the integrated international terminal, began operating on July 7, 2023, and domestic flights use Terminals 1 and 4. If your travel time by train or road is under a few hours, a train that reaches the city centre often saves the airport transfer. Check actual timetables on the railway and airline sites, since they change.
How early should you arrive?
Arrive the day before. An overnight train that runs late, a delayed flight or a bad day of traffic can all cost you the slot. Booking a room for the night before also gives you a place to repack your document folder and sleep properly.
Indian Railways shortened its advance reservation period to 60 days from November 1, 2024, excluding the day of travel, while foreign tourists keep a 365-day window. So if your appointment is more than two months away, you cannot book the outward train yet. Keep an eye on the opening date, and book as soon as the window allows, because popular trains fill quickly.
How do you reach Thousand Lights from each arrival point?
From Chennai Central, the Blue Line of Chennai Metro goes Central, Government Estate, LIC and Thousand Lights, which is three stops. From Egmore, take the Green Line one stop to Central and change to the Blue Line. From the airport, the Blue Line runs directly to Thousand Lights with no change, about ten stops. The metro is reported to run from about 5 AM to 11 PM, so check the timetable on the Chennai Metro site, and use a cab if you arrive outside those hours.
Embassy Park is on Anna Salai in Thousand Lights, with Thousand Lights Metro within walking distance. The hotel's advice is to ask the 24-hour reception for a cab from the airport or from Chennai Central, which helps on late arrivals.
What does a visa-trip stay cost?
Rooms at Embassy Park are Rs 2,800 per night for a Deluxe Double with a queen bed or twin beds, Rs 3,500 for a Deluxe Triple and Rs 3,800 for a Luxury Triple. Rates are per room per night, and the current rate and taxes should be reconfirmed when you book. Check-in is at 2 PM and check-out is at 12 PM.
If your train arrives at 6 AM, ask the hotel in advance what can be arranged for an early arrival rather than expecting a room. Reception is open 24 hours, so you will not be locked out.
What does a sample plan look like?
For a morning appointment, a sensible plan runs over three nights, not one. Arrive on the afternoon of day one, check in at 2 PM, and spend the evening laying out your documents and resting. Day two is the interview. Day three is a buffer for travel, or for anything the consulate asks you to do afterwards.
Do not book a non-refundable return ticket for the same evening as your interview. Interviews are short, but queues, delays and any follow-up can take longer than you expect. Wait times are estimates, and processing, mailing of documents and any administrative steps happen after the interview. Leave your return open or flexible where you can.
If your plans change after you arrive, speak to the reception early about extending the stay, because availability depends on the dates. Keep your DS-160 confirmation, appointment letter and fee receipt together, and keep a second copy on your phone. Carry cash and a payment card, and have the hotel address saved in your phone and on paper. Questions about dates, room types or arrival time can go to the reception on +91 72007 60076, by call or WhatsApp, and the team will confirm the current rate before you book.
