Chennai Airport to Thousand Lights by Metro: Step by Step

Chennai International Airport and Thousand Lights are on the same Blue Line of Chennai Metro, so you do not change trains. It is about ten stops north from the airport, and a cab is the easier choice with heavy luggage or outside metro hours.
Is there a direct metro from Chennai Airport to Thousand Lights?
Yes. Chennai International Airport station and Thousand Lights station are both on the Blue Line, which runs from Wimco Nagar Depot in the north to the airport in the south. You board at the airport and ride towards Wimco Nagar without changing. The airport is in Tirusulam, around 21 km southwest of the city centre, so the line also gives you a look at the south of the city.
The stations in order are Chennai Airport, Meenambakkam, Nanganallur Road, Alandur, Guindy, Little Mount, Saidapet, Nandanam, Teynampet, AG-DMS and Thousand Lights. That is ten stops after the airport. Thousand Lights is underground and sits between AG-DMS and LIC.
How do you buy a ticket?
Chennai Metro lists several options: single-journey tokens, stored-value cards, trip cards and tourist cards, QR tickets bought through the CMRL mobile app, and the National Common Mobility Card, branded Singara Chennai. A WhatsApp ticketing number is also listed on the official site. Wikipedia reports a minimum fare of Rs 10 and a maximum of Rs 50, but fares change, so check the fare table before you travel.
If you arrive on an international flight and do not yet have a local data connection, a token or card from the station is the simpler option. Keep small notes ready.
When does the metro run?
Wikipedia reports that trains run from 5 AM to 11 PM, with the Blue Line averaging a train every 6 minutes at peak and every 12 minutes off-peak. We could not open the official timetable page, so treat those figures as a guide and confirm on the Chennai Metro website.
That means a late-night flight may land after the last train. In that case use a cab. The hotel notes that its 24-hour reception can arrange a cab from the airport or from Chennai Central, so message ahead with your flight number and expected arrival time.
What is the walk from the station?
Thousand Lights station has four gates, labelled A1 to A4, and is named after the nearby Thousand Lights Mosque. Embassy Park is on Anna Salai at the corner of Aziz Mulk 7th Street, and Thousand Lights Metro is within walking distance. Check the gate signs as you come up from the platform, and use the map on your phone to pick the right exit for Anna Salai.
With one cabin bag the walk is simple. With two large suitcases, after a long flight, a cab from the airport may be less tiring, especially in the Chennai heat and humidity.
Metro or cab: which should you choose?
The metro avoids road traffic and is predictable in time. A cab is door to door, which suits families, older travellers and anyone with heavy bags. Neither option is always better, so decide by your luggage and arrival hour.
Check-in at Embassy Park is at 2 PM and check-out is at 12 PM. If you land early, ask in advance what can be arranged. Rooms start at Rs 2,800 per night, and every room has air conditioning, free Wi-Fi and a tea and coffee maker, which is welcome after a long journey. Rates should be reconfirmed when you book.
Keep the hotel's phone number handy, in case the driver or your own map needs a clarification.
- Same line, no change: board towards Wimco Nagar
- About ten stops after Chennai Airport
- Trains reported 5 AM to 11 PM, confirm before you travel
- Cab from the 24-hour reception for late arrivals
What should international arrivals know?
Terminal 2, the integrated terminal for international operations, began operating on July 7, 2023. Domestic flights use Terminals 1 and 4. The metro station is connected to the airport, and Tirusulam suburban railway station is also integrated with the metro and airport terminals, so there are several ways out of the airport area.
Outside the terminals, prepaid taxis and ride-hailing services such as Ola and Uber are reported to operate. Wikipedia describes them as available, but we have not verified the current pick-up points or prices, so follow the airport signs and compare options on arrival. Confirm the fare or meter practice before you set off, and keep the hotel address ready to show the driver.
After a long flight, the metro can feel like a lot of effort, so consider your energy and luggage honestly. If you take a cab, expect road traffic, especially at peak hours. If you take the metro, you avoid traffic but need to carry your own bags through stations and stairs or escalators. Either way, the 24-hour reception at Embassy Park means a late or early arrival is not a problem. To book, call or WhatsApp +91 72007 60076 with your dates and number of guests, and ask the team to reconfirm the current rate and any taxes before you travel.
