Short answer

Chennai is hot and humid for most of the year, with the hottest weather from late April to early July and the most rain from October to December. November to February is usually the most comfortable period, with the northeast monsoon rains in the first half of it.

What does Chennai weather look like through the year?

Chennai has a tropical climate with high humidity all year because of the coast. Reference sources describe a hot period from April through June, when daytime temperatures commonly reach the mid to high 30s Celsius, and a cooler period from about November to February. The record high is 45 degrees Celsius, set on May 31, 2003.

WeatherSpark's long-term averages say the hot season runs from April 28 to July 4, with May the hottest month at an average high around 36 degrees Celsius. The cool season runs from November 1 to mid-February, and January is the coldest, with an average low around 22 degrees Celsius. Cool here is relative, so dress for warm weather in every month.

When is the rainy season?

The city receives roughly 120 cm of rain per year, much of it from the northeast monsoon between October and December. WeatherSpark lists November as the wettest month, with about 11 inches on average. Cyclones and depressions in the Bay of Bengal can bring heavy rain and flooding in low-lying areas, and Chennai has seen severe flooding in recent years.

For travellers this means that October to December brings the highest chance of delays and wet pavements, though rain often arrives in bursts rather than all day. Allow extra time to reach your appointment or meeting, and check the forecast from the Indian Meteorological Department the night before.

Which months suit which kind of trip?

Tamil Nadu Tourism recommends November to February as the best time to visit, because the temperature is moderate. WeatherSpark's tourism score also points to mid-December to mid-February. If you can choose your dates freely, that is the window to aim for, though it is also when the Madras Music Season and Pongal bring crowds and higher demand for rooms.

If your date is fixed, as with a visa appointment, simply plan around it. March is the driest month on average, so it can be an easy month for outdoor walking, but the heat builds quickly from April.

  • December to February: warm days, cooler mornings, busiest for visitors
  • March: dry, heat rising
  • April to June: hottest, plan indoor time in the afternoon
  • July to September: hot and humid, rain varies
  • October to November: northeast monsoon, carry an umbrella

What should you pack?

Light cotton clothes work for every month, with one layer for air-conditioned rooms and offices. A compact umbrella is useful from October to December and also gives shade in the hot months. Comfortable closed shoes help on wet roads, and a hat and sunscreen help in April to June.

For a visa trip, remember that security rules at visa sections often restrict bags and umbrellas, so check your appointment instructions and keep your rain gear in the room until you need it.

How does the hotel help with the heat and rain?

Every room at Embassy Park has air conditioning, which makes a real difference in April to June. Embassy Park is on Anna Salai in Thousand Lights, a few minutes from the US Consulate General, with Spencer Plaza and Thousand Lights Metro within walking distance, so you spend less time outdoors in bad weather.

The mini fridge and tea and coffee maker are handy for cold water and a hot drink after a wet walk. Rooms start at Rs 2,800 per night, and rates should be reconfirmed when you book, especially in the busy December and January period.

If you are choosing between two possible months, lean towards the cooler window for outdoor plans, and towards flexible plans in the monsoon months.

How do heat, humidity and storms affect a day?

Humidity is high through most of the year, so even a moderate temperature can feel warm. WeatherSpark classes about eleven months of the year as muggy, with August having the most muggy days. Plan outdoor walking for early morning or late afternoon, drink plenty of water, and rest indoors in the middle of the day during April to June.

Chennai has also seen serious flooding, with severe water inundation recorded in 2015 and 2023. In a heavy rain event, roads and some low-lying areas can be badly affected and transport can be disrupted. If a cyclone or heavy rain warning is issued, follow the guidance of local authorities, check airline and railway updates, and stay in touch with your hotel.

The Indian Meteorological Department publishes forecasts and warnings, and local news carries them too. If you have a fixed appointment, such as a visa interview, check the forecast the day before and leave a little extra time for the journey. Staying within walking distance of your destination reduces the risk of being caught in a bad road situation. If you would like to check availability, message the hotel on +91 72007 60076 with your dates and number of guests, and confirm the rate and taxes in writing before you pay.
