Visa and consulate
What Not to Bring to the US Consulate in Chennai

US consulates usually do not allow bags, phones, laptops, food or liquids inside the visa section, and queues form outside with no place to store them. Check the security instructions on your appointment confirmation, then leave everything else in your room and carry only a document folder.
Which items are usually not allowed at a US visa section?
The consulate's own instructions for your appointment are the final word, and they are printed on your confirmation or posted on the official appointment website. We could not open the India page for the current security notice, so the list below comes from a widely shared third-party summary of the rules that apply across US embassies and consulates. Use it as a prompt to check, not as a ruling.
That summary lists electronics such as mobile phones, smart watches, cameras, laptops and flash drives, plus handbags, backpacks, briefcases and suitcases. It also lists food and drink, bottles, liquids such as perfume and sanitiser, sharp objects like scissors and nail files, lighters and matches, and long umbrellas. Its main advice is to bring only the items and documents that relate to your visa application.
Why does this matter for planning your day?
If you arrive carrying a laptop bag or a phone you cannot take in, you have a problem to solve on the pavement at the worst possible moment. Nobody wants to be late for a fixed appointment slot while looking for somewhere to leave a bag. The State Department also reminds applicants that appointment wait times are estimates that vary from week to week, so a missed slot can cost real time.
The simplest fix is to arrive with nothing to store. Walk over from your room with a clear folder holding your passport, DS-160 confirmation page, appointment letter, receipt and any supporting papers, and nothing else. If you need your phone for a cab or a call, plan that part before you reach the gate.
What can you leave in the room?
Staying nearby makes this easy. At Embassy Park every room has a work desk and a mini fridge, so you can leave your laptop, charger, power bank and a bottle of water in the room and collect them after the interview. The tea and coffee maker in the room means you can have a hot drink before you leave without carrying anything with you.
Housekeeping and laundry are available, so you can ask the reception about getting clothes washed before the interview. Do ask about timings rather than assuming a turnaround.
- Laptop, tablet and chargers
- Power bank and extra phone
- Shopping bags and backpacks
- Water bottle, snacks and sanitiser
- Spare jewellery and valuables you do not need
What if you are travelling in a group?
Families often forget that children and older relatives also have their own appointment letters and also cannot carry bags in. Decide in the room who carries which folder, and keep one person's phone outside as the point of contact if the rules allow. Applicants are usually called individually, and companions may be asked to wait outside, so agree a meeting point in advance.
A triple room suits a small family, with a queen bed and a single bed. The Deluxe Triple is Rs 3,500 per night and the Luxury Triple, the most spacious room, is Rs 3,800 per night. Confirm the current rate and any taxes when you book.
What should you do the evening before?
Read the security section of your appointment letter slowly. Pack the folder, then take a photo of every document and store it somewhere safe so you can replace anything quickly. Leave everything else packed in your main bag so there is nothing to sort in the morning.
Reception at Embassy Park is open 24 hours with VIP check-in and check-out, so leaving early for a morning slot, or returning late after the interview, does not need any special planning. The property is smoke-free throughout, which also means you will not be carrying the smell of smoke into the interview.
How should you handle your phone and money on the day?
Because phones are commonly restricted inside visa sections, arrange the practical parts of the day before you set out. Book or confirm any cab you will need afterwards, save the hotel's address and phone number, and tell a family member roughly when you expect to be finished. Interviews are usually short, but the queue and security checks add time, so do not promise to call at a fixed minute.
Carry only what you need for the walk and the hour or two afterwards. A small amount of cash for a drink or an auto-rickshaw is sensible, and the rest can stay in the room. If you do carry a phone to the gate and are told it cannot go in, you should have a plan that does not depend on finding storage nearby, which we could not verify exists.
None of this needs to feel heavy. The idea is simply that the less you bring, the fewer decisions you face at the entrance. Walk to the consulate from the hotel with a folder in your hand, show your documents when asked, and follow the staff instructions. Afterwards you can return to the room, collect your things and plan the rest of your day without having been separated from your belongings.
