Senior Applicants and US Visa Interviews in Chennai

Since 1 October 2025 the State Department no longer treats applicants aged 80 and over, or under 14, as generally exempt from the visa interview, so most older applicants should expect to attend in person. Plan a calm stay close to the consulate and confirm the latest rules before you travel.
Do senior citizens still get an interview waiver?
Until 2025, many older applicants and young children could be considered for the interview waiver, also called dropbox. The State Department's update dated September 18, 2025 says that from October 1, 2025, nonimmigrant visa applicants of all ages should generally expect an in-person interview. The exemption for people under 14 and over 79 is no longer listed.
The waiver still exists for some categories, including certain B-1/B-2 renewals within 12 months of the old visa's expiry, if the earlier visa was full validity, the applicant was 18 or older, and there are no prior refusals. The update also says officers can require an interview for any reason. Rules change, so check the Department of State and your appointment instructions before you plan travel.
How should an older applicant prepare?
Keep the preparation simple and physical. Make sure the passport is valid for at least six months, the DS-160 confirmation page is printed, and the appointment letter and fee receipt are in the same folder. If a family member helped fill out the form, sit down together beforehand and go through the answers so the applicant knows them. The officer asks the applicant, not the helper.
We cannot give immigration advice, and the best place to read about what to expect is the official visitor visa page. What we can say is that a rested, unhurried applicant has an easier day, and that depends partly on where you sleep the night before.
Why does a close-by room make the day easier?
Long walks, heat and queues are tiring at any age. Embassy Park is on Anna Salai in Thousand Lights, a few minutes from the US Consulate General at 220 Anna Salai, so there is no cross-town drive on the morning of the interview. You can go back to the room afterwards to rest instead of waiting outside.
The rooms are air-conditioned and each has a tea and coffee maker, a mini fridge and free Wi-Fi, so an older traveller can have a warm drink and a quiet half hour before leaving. The reception is open 24 hours, which helps if your train or flight lands late. If mobility is a concern, please ask the reception about lift and step-free access and the floor before you book.
Which room should you choose?
For a couple, the Deluxe Double Queen at Rs 2,800 per night is the simple choice. If two older relatives prefer separate beds, the Deluxe Double Twin is also Rs 2,800 per night. If a younger family member travels with them, a triple room is Rs 3,500 for the Deluxe Triple or Rs 3,800 for the Luxury Triple, which is the most spacious.
Rates are per room per night and should be reconfirmed at booking. Check-in is at 2 PM and check-out is at 12 PM, so for an early-morning arrival ask in advance what is possible rather than assuming an early room.
What else is nearby if the day runs long?
Apollo Hospital on Greams Road is a 5 to 10 minute walk from the hotel and Sankara Nethralaya is close by, which is reassuring for older travellers who may want to know medical help is near. Spencer Plaza and Thousand Lights Metro are within walking distance.
Carry any regular medicines in their original packaging, and keep a list of them in your folder. This is general travel sense, not medical advice, and your own doctor is the person to ask about travel with a health condition.
How do you get from the station or airport to the hotel?
Older travellers often prefer the simplest route. A cab arranged through the hotel's 24-hour reception avoids stairs, crowds and the walk from the station. If you choose the metro, Thousand Lights station is on the Blue Line, three stops from Chennai Central and about ten stops from the airport, and the hotel is within walking distance of the station.
Chennai Central is a very large station, with 17 platforms and roughly 730,000 passengers a day, so allow time to find the exit and arrange a porter if you have luggage. Do not assume a particular service is available, and confirm arrangements ahead of time. Please ask the reception about airport pick-up, or plan the transfer yourself.
Arrive a day before the interview, with a full evening to rest. Check-in is at 2 PM and check-out is at 12 PM, so a morning arrival means asking in advance what can be arranged. Reception is open 24 hours with VIP check-in and check-out, so an overnight train arriving at an odd hour is not a problem for the front desk. If you would like to check availability, message the hotel on +91 72007 60076 with your dates and number of guests, and confirm the rate and taxes in writing before you pay.
