Which place of worship is closest to Thousand Lights?
Thousand Lights Mosque stands on Anna Salai and gives the neighbourhood its name. It was built in 1810 by Umdat ul-Umara, the Nawab of Arcot, and is described as one of the largest mosques in India, with five domes and two minarets. It remains an active Shia mosque and the base of the chief Shia Qazi of Chennai.
As a working place of prayer it has its own rules about who may enter and when. We could not verify visiting hours or access for non-worshippers, so please be respectful when passing, and ask locally before going inside.
What about St. George's Cathedral?
St. George's Cathedral is on Cathedral Road, which meets Anna Salai at Gemini Circle. It was built in 1815 and consecrated on January 6, 1816, in a neoclassical style, with a tall spire, pillars and marble memorials inside.
It is part of the Church of South India, which was inaugurated at this site in 1947, and it still serves more than 1,200 families. Hours for visitors and services are set by the cathedral, so check before you plan a visit.
Is Mylapore worth a half day?
Yes, if you have a free afternoon. Mylapore has the Kapaleeshwarar Temple, dedicated to Shiva, which dates to around the 7th century in tradition, although the present gopuram, about 40 metres high, was built in 1906. Worship takes place several times a day, and the temple tank hosts a three-day float festival each year.
The Santhome Basilica, also in Mylapore, is a 16th-century church built over what is held to be the tomb of Apostle Thomas, and is described as one of only three such churches in the world. Parthasarathy Temple in Triplicane, dedicated to Krishna, dates to the 8th century. These sites are best reached by cab or a mix of metro and a short ride.
What etiquette should you follow?
General practice at Hindu temples and mosques in India is to remove your shoes before entering, dress modestly with shoulders and knees covered, and avoid pointing your feet at the deity or altar. Ask before taking photographs, especially inside. This is general guidance rather than a rule for any one site, so follow the signs and staff instructions on the day.
Midday closures are common at temples, and festival days can be very crowded. Carry small change for shoe stands and offerings if you wish, and keep your phone and valuables close.
- Check opening hours the day before
- Cover shoulders and knees
- Remove footwear where asked
- Ask before photographing people or inner areas
How do you fit this into a stay?
For a visa or business trip, you may only have a spare morning. St. George's Cathedral and the mosque are the easiest to reach from Thousand Lights. For Mylapore, allow half a day and avoid the hottest hours from April to June.
Embassy Park is on Anna Salai in Thousand Lights. Check-in is at 2 PM and check-out at 12 PM, and the reception is open 24 hours. Rooms start at Rs 2,800 per night, and the current rate should be reconfirmed when you book.
If you travel with children or older relatives, choose one site per outing and keep the rest for another day. Queues, heat and shoe-free floors can be tiring, and a rushed visit loses the quiet that makes these places worth seeing. Take a cab for the longer trips, agree a meeting point if you get separated, and keep a card with the hotel address in your pocket.
Are there other historic places nearby?
Chennai has several other well-known religious sites. The Armenian Church of the Virgin Mary was built in 1712 and is counted among the oldest churches in the subcontinent. St. Thomas Mount is the site of a shrine to Mother Mary dating to 1523, and is associated with the martyrdom of the Apostle Thomas. Fort St George, the first British fortress in the city, has St. Mary's Church, described as the oldest Anglican church east of Suez.
These are a little further out, so treat them as separate trips. If you are interested in architecture, the cathedral and the mosque show two very different styles within the same part of the city: neoclassical with a spire in one, and Indo-Islamic with domes and minarets in the other.
Festival days can change access, and some places close in the afternoon or during special services. If you are unsure, ask the hotel's 24-hour reception on the previous evening. We have not verified opening hours for any of these places, so please check locally. If you would like to check availability, message the hotel on +91 72007 60076 with your dates and number of guests, and confirm the rate and taxes in writing before you pay.
